Technical Rescue

Animal Rescue Unit

The Wellington SPCA Animal Rescue Unit (ARU) now covers the Wairarapa and is able to respond to complex or difficult rescues of animals, including:

  • Rope Rescue (e.g. dogs on cliffs, cats up trees for more than 24 hours)
  • Swiftwater Rescue (e.g. animals trapped by flood water)
  • Urban Search & Rescue (e.g. animals trapped following earthquakes)
  • Technical Large Animal Emergency Response (e.g. horses stuck in mud or wells)

ARU members come from staff and volunteers of Wellington SPCA and are qualified to international rescue standards set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA1670:2014, Standard for Technical Rescue Operations & Training – Animal Rescue). They also meet the national standards for USAR Responder and other response qualifications.
